It began with the question, “What if patients could bring home a piece of hope following their clinic visit?”

Sunshine Art for Healing was founded by Grace Sun when she was a medical student at Brown Warren Alpert Medical School. She is currently a resident physician in the Brown Internal Medicine program. For Grace, the idea for this project grew from a combination of personal experiences during clinical training, caring for cancer patients, and a lifelong passion for art. Through working in the hospital and cancer center, Grace developed an appreciation for an interdisciplinary approach to medicine and healing.

Initially supported by personal funds through a part time job, this initiative is now funded by Barbara Rosen Endowment. These postcards are being offered to support patients who are undergoing cancer treatment.

Grace believes that the intersection of art and medicine creates well-being, resilience, and empathy, making physicians holistic providers. In medical school, she initiated and designed a novel pre-clinical elective course, Studio Art for Medical Students, where she directed and instructed the class. Additionally, she has been an active member of Brown Warren Alpert Medical School Art Council since 2017 and an elected program leader from 2019-2021 when she organized and launched an on-site annual art exhibition to showcase the beautiful creations by faculty, staff, and students while overcoming budget challenges.
